Basic Training for Polar Operations

This class is designed to provide a basic background for those mariners involved in working on vessels in polar waters. It meets the proposed standards of Table A-V/4-1 of the STCW Code as currently proposed. It has been reviewed by the Coast Guard and has been determined to meet the basic training guidance provided in MSC 95/22/Add.2 Annex 9. When U. S. regulations are issued regarding training for ships operating in polar waters, we have been directed by the Coast Guard to resubmit this course for formal approval. The Coast Guard in their letter to AVTEC on March 7, 2017 stated that persons who have completed this course “are deemed to have fulfilled the STCW requirements and can work on vessels certified in accordance with the Polar Code. Prerequisite: Students must possess a Mate or Master’s license.
